ProteusDS Update November 2024
We’re excited to announce that ProteusDS v2.72 is available. Click here to download now. This version includes the new Ship Motion toolset. Read on for more details.
Easily evaluate large yacht motion-affected comfort with the Ship Motion toolset
The new ISO standard on evaluating motion-affected comfort for large yachts requires an operability analysis process. An aggregate evaluation of ship motion performance in a range of sea states and vessel speeds contributes to a comfort rating based on a 5-star scale. The Ship Motion toolset consists of new software capabilities to easily evaluate this ISO comfort rating.
The comfort rating is based on evaluating motions at a minimum of five areas on the ship, and checks whether thresholds on Motion Sickness Incidence (MSI) and Effective Gravity Angle (EGA) are exceeded. The comfort rating then corresponds to the amount that these thresholds are exceeded, and an associated rating on a 5-star scale, with 5-stars being the highest comfort value.
Evaluating an ISO comfort rating for a yacht is completed in the new Ship Motion Toolbox. There are two primary inputs for this: the coordinates for a minimum of five areas to evaluate motions, and also a motion RAO. The motion RAO file format follows the standard output as computed and exported by the ProteusDS ShipMo3D toolset.
Reporting on ISO comfort rating
The Ship Motion toolbox then produces detailed outputs on the comfort rating at rest and transit speeds, for each area, and an aggregate overall comfort rating. The MSI and EGA values at each location are also available for a more detailed view on the results.

Successful presentation at HISWA Symposium November 22, 2024
DSA Ocean CTO Ryan Nicoll presented a paper on how the ISO motion-affected comfort rating helps in early-stage yacht design at the HISWA Symposium November 22, 2024. The paper reviewed comfort ratings of three different Generic Yachts and explored the design feedback it provided when changing parameters like VCG and fin stabilizer fin areas. The HISWA Symposium was a great success and we look forward to the next symposium in 2026.
New ShipMo3D toolset sample projects
Three new ShipMo3D toolset sample projects are available. This includes three sizes of Generic Yacht: 50m, 65m, and 95m. These projects were created through a collaboration with Naval Architect Matthew Scicluna as part of a conference paper presented at the HISWA Symposium. The sample projects can be downloaded here.
